Recently Netflix launched its affordable plans supported by ads
And the
Bad News is: if you have an older Chromecast device then you won’t be able to use the ad-supported Netflix plan.
Netflix has published a support page that explains which devices support the new “Basic with ads” tier that offers 720p streaming and ad breaks for $6.99 per month. On that page, Google’s Chromecast lineup is excluded unless you’re using the latest models.
As per Netflix:
To cast Netflix to a Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra, you’ll need to upgrade your Netflix plan to Basic, Standard, or Premium.
It’s still not clear why Netflix is not interested in Chromecast while on the other hand Netflix also notes on this same page that Android 7.0 or later is required to use this plan on phones or tablets.
The “Basic with ads” plan is available now on Netflix in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea but if you are a Chromecast user then Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) are able to use the ad-supported Netflix tier.
